Supplies Needed

  • Aran weight yarn in three colors:

    • Nose color

    • Chin color

    • Main square color

  • 5 mm crochet hook

  • Scissors

  • Yarn needle

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Make the Nose

Using your nose color, create a magic circle.
Chain 3 (counts as first double crochet), then work 2 double crochets into the magic circle.

2. Begin the Face

Cut the nose yarn and attach the chin color.
Chain 2 to create the first corner space.

3. Form the Square Base

Into the magic circle, work:
3 DC, CH2 — repeat this sequence three times to form a square.
Slip stitch to join and close the round.

4. Highlight the Nose

Slip stitch into the back loop of the nose corner.
Continue slip stitching into each of the nose-colored loops (3 more stitches).
Do not cut the yarn yet.

5. Tidy the Ends

Weave in the loose ends from earlier steps.
If you like, use the chin color yarn ends to lightly wrap around the stitches and define a small mouth shape.

6. Build the Square

Slip stitch into the nearest corner space.
Chain 2 (to match DC height).
Work 3 DC into the corner space.
CH2, then 3 DC into the next corner space.
Repeat this in each corner around.

7. Add Another Round

Chain 3 and turn your work.
In each side space, work clusters of 3 DC.
In each corner space, work 3 DC, CH2, 3 DC.

8. Attach the Main Color

Join your main color yarn in the lower right corner and chain 3.
Continue the granny square pattern:

  • 3 DC clusters in side spaces

  • 3 DC, CH2, 3 DC in corner spaces

Slip stitch to join where necessary.

9. Finish the Square

Once your square reaches the desired size, cut the yarn and weave in all remaining ends neatly.

Add the Cat Features

Embroider the Eyes

Using a yarn needle and contrasting yarn, stitch the eyes onto the face.
You can:

  • Wrap yarn around a DC cluster for round eyes

  • Make small curved stitches for sleepy eyes

Create the Ears

Attach yarn to the top corner of the square.
Chain 2, then make a puff stitch (3 unfinished DC closed together).
Repeat in the next space to shape the ear.
Turn your work and add another puff stitch for extra height.
Cut the yarn, pull tight, and weave in the ends securely.

Customize Your Cat 🐾

Have fun making your cat unique!

  • Experiment with different color combinations

  • Add whiskers or a tiny bow

  • Make rounded ears for a bear look

  • Try longer ears for a bunny variation

And of course, don’t forget to give your crochet cat a name! 😺
