Interlocking Block Stitch Pattern

Interlocking Block Stitch Blanket Tutorial

Below, I’ll explain how to crochet the Interlocking Block Stitch. This stitch has a beautifully textured and sturdy finish. Because the stitches are worked over previous rows, the fabric becomes thick, warm, and cozy—making it an excellent choice for blankets.

How to Crochet the Blanket

Foundation

Start with Aquamarine using a 5 mm hook.

  • Chain 154.
(For a different size, start with a multiple of 4 + 2 chains.)

Row 1

Work 1 dc in the 4th chain from the hook and 1 dc in the next chain.
* Ch 2, skip 2 chains, 1 dc in each of the next 2 chains. *
Repeat from * to * until the last chain, then work 1 dc in the final chain.

Row 2

Ch 1, 1 sc in the first stitch, ch 2, skip 2 dc.
* Working over the ch-2 space and into the unworked foundation chains from the row below, work 1 dc in each of the next 2 chains (this encloses the ch-2 from Row 1), ch 2, skip 2 dc. *
Repeat from * to * until the turning chain, then work 1 sc in the top of ch 3.

At the end of the row, change to Natural. Let Aquamarine hang—you will pick it up again two rows later along the side.

Row 3

Ch 3.
* Working over the ch-2 space and into the tops of the dc stitches from the row below, work 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, ch 2, skip 2 dc. *
Repeat from * to * until the final ch-2 space and sc. Work 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, then 1 dc in the sc.

Row 4

Ch 1, 1 sc in the first stitch, ch 2, skip the next 2 dc.
* Working over the next ch-2 space and into the tops of the dc stitches from two rows below, work 1 dc in each of the next 2 dc, ch 2, skip the next 2 dc. *
Repeat from * to * until the turning chain, then work 1 sc in the top of ch 3.

At the end of the row, change back to Aquamarine, carrying the yarn neatly up the side. Let Natural hang; you will use it again two rows later.

Rows 5 and Onward

Repeat Rows 3 and 4, changing colors every two rows following this sequence:

  • 4 rows Aquamarine

  • 4 rows Mint

  • 4 rows Emerald

Repeat this color sequence until you have completed three full sets of all three colors.

Final Row

Finish with Emerald as follows:

Ch 1, 1 sc in the first stitch.
* Working over the next ch-2 space and into the dc stitches from two rows below, work 1 sc in each of the next 2 dc, then 1 sc in each of the next 2 dc. *
Repeat from * to * until the end of the row.
Fasten off.
